Summer musicianship Opportunities

Cannon Music Campwww.cannon.appstate.edu  – This Appalachian State University music camp is for rising 9th graders only and is the most intensive of the summer music camps listed on this page.  This camp is a three week-long, sleep away camp that is only for the most advanced rising 9th-grade musicians.  Scholarships are available for those that qualify for all-district, all-region and all-state ensembles.  Acceptance is based on application and audition.  Ensemble placement auditions take place the second day of camp.

Camp Fortissimowww.karlkassnermusiccamp.com – The Karl Kassner Brass Camp is for players of brass instruments only (Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone, Baritone/Euphonium and Tuba).  It is a fantastic camp for all brass players regardless of their experience and ability level.  The one-week day camp is held on the campus of Bishop McGuinness High School.  Acceptance is based on application.

John Coltrane Jazz Workshopwww.highpointarts.org/arts/arts-education-programs/john-coltrane-jazz-workshop – The JCJW hosted by the High Point Arts Council is the perfect summer jazz camp for the emerging jazz musician.  The week-long day camp is hosted at the Penn-Griffin School for the Arts.  Acceptance is based on application.  Scholarships are available.

Mars Hill Summer Music Campwww.marshillsummermusiccamp.weebly.com – The Mars Hill Summer Music Camp is a great comprehensive music camp for middle school age musicians regardless of their ability level or years of experience.  This week-long, sleep-away camp is held on the campus of Mars Hill University located near Asheville, in the mountains of North Carolina.  Acceptance is based on application.  Ensemble placement auditions take place on the first day of camp.

Music For All Summer Symposiumhttp://camp.musicforall.org/ – The Music for All Summer Symposium is a massive music camp held in Muncie, Indiana.  Students may choose a variety of paths including marching winds, marching percussion, drum major, concert band, orchestra, Colorguard, jazz band, leadership, and middle school.

Summer Symposium For Marching Artswww.prideofthemountains.com (click Summer Symposium) – The Summer Symposium for Marching Arts is held at Western Carolina University.  Students may choose a variety of paths including wind leadership, drum major, Colorguard, percussion, and rock and record.  Each track offers a unique experience including participating in clinics with the drum corps in residence.  

UNCG Summer Music Campwww.smcamp.org – The UNCG Summer Music Camp is advertised as “America’s Most Popular” summer music camp because it is the most heavily attended.  This is also a comprehensive week long camp that is open to students of any experience and ability level.  Our students would have the option of attending as day campers (cheaper) or residential campers.  Acceptance is based on application.  Ensemble placement is by director recommendation.

UNCW Summer Jazz Workshopwww.uncw.edu/music/smc/smcjazz.html – Held on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, this summer jazz camp is for musicians with some jazz experience.  This week long, sleep away camp is great for students that have participated in jazz band, especially for those that would like to have a better understanding of and improve their ability to improvise.

Winston-Salem Youth Flute Ensemble – This ensemble is for flute players of any experience and ability level and it rehearses one day a week for eight weeks during the summer with a flexible attendance policy that accommodates vacations and other camps.  The instruction provided is unequaled because of the specific instrumentation and outstanding teachers.  The ensemble has several performances.  Acceptance is based on communication with the ensemble organizers.  Contact ljokopny@yahoo.com  or call 336-406-9906 for more information.

The Salem Bandwww.salemband.org – Established in 1771, the Salem Band is the nation’s oldest continuous mixed wind ensemble.

The Winston-Salem Community Band – www.wsband.org – This ensemble gives amateur musicians the opportunity to continue to use the skills learned through participation in school band.

The New Horizons Bandwww.newhorizonsmusic.org/new-horizons-groups/north-carolina-new-horizons – Originally created for musicians over 50 years of age, the New Horizons Band now welcomes participants of any age, experience and ability level.

Local Volunteer Groups

The Wachovia Windswww.piedmontwindsymphony.com/wachovia-winds – This youth honor band would be atainable by our more advanced second year and third year students.  There is an application process and membership fee.  The ensemble rehearses/performs in the Spring each year.

The North Carolina Youth Brass Bandwww.ncbrassband.org/ncybb.html – This youth brass band is composed of some of the most talented middle school/high school brass musicians in the Triad.  There is an application and audition process and a membership fee.  This ensemble would only be for the most advanced middle school brass players.

The Piedmont Honor Bandwww.seannelson.homestead.com/PHB.html – This youth honor band has a two day clinic and concert using a similar format to that of the all-county and all-district bands.  There is a registration and acceptance process but no audition or minimum ability requirement.  The PHB clinic event takes place in March each year
